If saving some money doesnt interest you, this post may be a waste of your time. But, if youre like me, any bit of cash I can spend on me instead of sending to Com-Ed or Nicor is definitely a bonus!
Since there is a fair amount of interest in saving not only cash, but energy, I have put together this list of ideas to help get you started. The best thing about this list is it will cost you ZERO dollars. You can save energy and money just by changing your habits! Check it out!
Here is my top ten list of Free Energy Saving Ideas:
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. As simple as this idea sounds it can save aconsiderable amount of water.
- Make use of natural light when possible. Open the blinds and turn off the lights!
- Clean refrigerator coils. Removing dirt and pet hair from the coils of your refrigerator make it run more efficiently and can actually extend the life.
- Reduce Phantom Loads whenever possible. Many electronic devices (T.V.s, VCRs etc.) draw energy even when they are off. Plug them into an outlet strip and turn off the power when not in use.
- Cook sensibly. Use the right size lids on pots to reduce steam escaping into the conditioned air. Use correct burners for the pot size. Utilize toaster ovens & microwaves rather than turning on the conventional oven for small dishes.
- Adjust your laundry habits. Wash your clothes in cold or warm water and rinse them in cold water. Use a cold water detergent.
- Remove laundry from the dryer the first time it is dried! Dont waste energy by fluffing the clothes several times.
- Take shorter showers. Reducing the length and temperature of your showers can save a substantial amount of water and the energy required to heat it.
- Turn off the Heated Dry on the dishwasher. Let the dishes dry on their own. You can also open the door to allow them to air dry.
- Operate major appliances in off peak times. It is less expensive and better for the environment to operate clothes dryers, pool filters and other large appliances in off peak hours.
There are obviously many more changes you can make to help save money while saving energy. Please share your ideas with us so we can all save. Feel free to post your ideas here or comment on the ideas I have already mentioned.

Wow! What a snow storm! This is the biggest snowfall Northern Illinois has seen in a long time. Most of us dont even remember the last big one
..
Now that the majority of the nasty stuff is over, there are a few areas of concern in and around your home. Some of it may seem like common sense, but sometimes we overlook the obvious.
For those of us with first floor or basement laundry areas, check to be sure the vent outside your home is not blocked with snow. This can not only be harmful to the dryer, but may cause unwanted Carbon Monoxide to be trapped in the house.
Snow drifts can be an easy way out for dogs…..
If your roof is flat or has a low pitch you should monitor the amount of snow on the roof and remove it before it is too heavy for the structure to support.
As soon as it is possible you should walk around the outside of your house looking for damage from the storm. High winds and driving snow or ice can wreak havoc on roofs and siding.
For all you dog lovers, if the snow in your yard is drifted as high as your fence is tall, your dog can take a leisurely stroll into the neighbors yard with very little effort. This will hold true even more as the temperatures drop and the drifts become more solid.
Snow against doors and windows may thaw and cause damage. There is a chance it may also refreeze and make it difficult or impossible to open them. Try to remove snow as it accumulates.
These are just a few of the many problems associated with a storm this size. If you have any questions about any suspected damage in or around your home, feel free to call me. I would be more than happy to discuss your issues and if we cant fix them over the phone, we can set up an appointment for me to come out and take a look.
