As promised, here is the second part of the blog I started last week. If you missed last week’s entry or just need to refresh your memory a bit, go ahead and check it out now.
Now that we are all on the same page, let me remind you that I really enjoy watching “Holmes Inspection”. There is a lot of information packed into a short amount of time. The one thing you have to remember when watching the show is that “Holmes Inspection” is a TV show.
Mike has an unlimited budget, or at least it seems that way. He is able to buy the most expensive tools and really impress the audience. But are they a necessity? I don’t think so. Some of those tools, like the Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) camera would be a great asset and fun to have, but a good inspector can find evidence of the same issues with a keen eye and some deductive reasoning.
Tearing out walls is not part of a home inspection.
Another thing to keep in the back of your head is many of the discrepancies found during the show are uncovered as the crew rips open walls, removes ceilings and digs up the basement floor. You cannot bash an inspector for not seeing something that is not visible. Remember, in Illinois, a home inspection is a limited, non invasive, visual examination of a home using specific guidelines set forth by the State of Illinois and the American Society of Home Inspectors.
As an inspector there are certain things we are not supposed to do. We are not supposed to move occupant’s belongings (even if it is blocking the entry for the attic or crawl space), move ceiling tiles, turn on breakers that have been turned off or ‘tripped’, or operate water shutoff valves just to name a few. Occasionally these rules may be bent a little, but the inspector is then responsible if something is broken or if the valve starts leaking.
So, as you can tell, I do like the show, but I take it with a grain of salt. After all, it is TV……….
