Hopefully by now you have realized we turned the clocks back over the weekend. If not, you are probably wondering why you are always the first one to arrive somewhere. I don’t blame you if you aren’t admitting that! Anyway, along with the time change I also recommend you change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Don’t wait until they start chirping. That is so annoying!
Today I want to briefly touch on the dangers of natural gas leaks. This may come as a surprise to some people, but natural gas has no odor of its own. The gas companies add a distinctive aroma to alert consumers of possible gas leaks. I am sure you have heard many horror stories about gas leaks that went bad. How many times have you smelled gas in your own house and decided to investigate the source yourself? That is not a good idea.
If you smell that distinctive odor of natural gas, the best thing to do is get out of the house. Do not turn on any switches. Do not operate any appliances. Do not even use your phone. Get out! Leave doors and windows open, get a safe distance away from the house and call 911 and/or the local gas company.
Even if the aroma is not over powering, the same applies. Let’s look at an example: There is a significant gas leak in the utility room but you come in the front door. The aroma is not very potent where you are standing. But what happens when you let that cool air in? The thermostat sees the drop in temperature and tells the furnace to get working. A large concentration of gas in the utility room could cause a large explosion.
My advice to anyone who smells the aroma of natural gas in their home is to exit the house immediately. Leave doors and windows open. Once you are a safe distance away from the house call 911 and/or the local gas company. Don’t take chances.
If you occasionally smell traces of natural gas in your home and want to determine if there is a small leak, give us a call. We would be happy to bring our gas detector over and check it out.
