In February 2010, Home Inspector Huntley IL discussed the difference between circuit breakers and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI’s) in an entry titled “Do circuit breakers and GFCI’s do the same thing?”
Now that we all understand what a GFCI does, we need to know where they need to be installed to offer the required protection. There are specific guidelines to follow for the proper placement of GFCI’s. These can be found in the most current edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC), which is published every three years.
According to the NEC it is required to provide GFCI protection in the following locations:
- All receptacles serving kitchen counters
- All bathroom receptacles
- All exterior receptacles except de-icing equipment without ready access
- Receptacles located six feet or less from laundry, utility or wet bar sinks
- All garage and unfinished basement or crawl space receptacles
- Receptacles in boat houses
There are some exceptions to these standards and there also very specific requirements for receptacles near or servicing pools and spas. If you have a question about those locations feel free to call our office.
The NEC is in itself not a law. Many state and local jurisdictions adopt some or all of the NEC as their code. Although the code is updated every three years, some jurisdictions do not immediately adopt the new edition. It is always best to check with your local building department with specific questions for your area.

Wow! What a snow storm! This is the biggest snowfall Northern Illinois has seen in a long time. Most of us dont even remember the last big one
..
Now that the majority of the nasty stuff is over, there are a few areas of concern in and around your home. Some of it may seem like common sense, but sometimes we overlook the obvious.
For those of us with first floor or basement laundry areas, check to be sure the vent outside your home is not blocked with snow. This can not only be harmful to the dryer, but may cause unwanted Carbon Monoxide to be trapped in the house.
Snow drifts can be an easy way out for dogs…..
If your roof is flat or has a low pitch you should monitor the amount of snow on the roof and remove it before it is too heavy for the structure to support.
As soon as it is possible you should walk around the outside of your house looking for damage from the storm. High winds and driving snow or ice can wreak havoc on roofs and siding.
For all you dog lovers, if the snow in your yard is drifted as high as your fence is tall, your dog can take a leisurely stroll into the neighbors yard with very little effort. This will hold true even more as the temperatures drop and the drifts become more solid.
Snow against doors and windows may thaw and cause damage. There is a chance it may also refreeze and make it difficult or impossible to open them. Try to remove snow as it accumulates.
These are just a few of the many problems associated with a storm this size. If you have any questions about any suspected damage in or around your home, feel free to call me. I would be more than happy to discuss your issues and if we cant fix them over the phone, we can set up an appointment for me to come out and take a look.
