Storm of the Century According To Home Inspector Huntley IL

These past couple days here in the Midwest have been pretty interesting weather wise. The storm that came through yesterday was pretty powerful. It has been called by some ‘The Storm of the Century’ and by others the ‘Chi-Clone’. Maybe it hasn’t packed as big of a punch as many thought it would, but it still was forceful enough to cause some major damage.

Meteorologists were intrigued by this storm because of its size and the barometric pressure it brought with it. It was thought to be more severe than the Blizzard of ’78, the March 1993 “Storm of the Century” or the storm of November 1975 that sank the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior. The wind that accompanied the storm had recorded gusts as high as 85mph. Tornado watches and warnings stretched from the great lakes down through Tennessee. Trees and power lines came down causing major damage and fires. And it isn’t done yet!

Today there are blizzard warnings in North Dakota and the wind is expected to be strong again throughout the great lakes and surrounding areas. So call it what you want, but in my opinion, this storm with its high winds, tornados and heavy rain was one for the record books.

So why am I so concerned with this storm? What is the purpose of this blog? There are some things you need to check out around your home after a storm like this. The first place I would look is the roof. A storm with winds like this can tear shingles or completely strip them off. Siding is also adversely affected by strong winds. Walk around the house and look for loose pieces of siding, trim & fascia.

Since there were still leaves on the trees, you may need to clean out your gutters again. I know…….you did that a few weeks ago after my blog about Fall Maintenance ideas. Sorry!

Next you should look at any trees you have in your yard. Look for damaged or broken branches that potentially may fall. This can be a hazard to your home or anyone walking below. If there are any other buildings on your property like an unattached garage or a shed you may want to look at those also.

Hopefully when you go out to look at your home you are pleasantly relieved to find no damage. Good Luck! If you have any questions about anything you find while looking over your home, give me a call.
Thanks for reading!

Wow! What a snow storm! This is the biggest snowfall Northern Illinois has seen in a long time. Most of us don’t even remember the last big one……..

Now that the majority of the nasty stuff is over, there are a few areas of concern in and around your home. Some of it may seem like common sense, but sometimes we overlook the obvious.

For those of us with first floor or basement laundry areas, check to be sure the vent outside your home is not blocked with snow. This can not only be harmful to the dryer, but may cause unwanted Carbon Monoxide to be trapped in the house.

Snow drifts can be an easy way out for dogs…..

If your roof is flat or has a low pitch you should monitor the amount of snow on the roof and remove it before it is too heavy for the structure to support.

As soon as it is possible you should walk around the outside of your house looking for damage from the storm. High winds and driving snow or ice can wreak havoc on roofs and siding.

For all you dog lovers, if the snow in your yard is drifted as high as your fence is tall, your dog can take a leisurely stroll into the neighbor’s yard with very little effort. This will hold true even more as the temperatures drop and the drifts become more solid.

Snow against doors and windows may thaw and cause damage. There is a chance it may also refreeze and make it difficult or impossible to open them. Try to remove snow as it accumulates.

These are just a few of the many problems associated with a storm this size. If you have any questions about any suspected damage in or around your home, feel free to call me. I would be more than happy to discuss your issues and if we can’t fix them over the phone, we can set up an appointment for me to come out and take a look.
